If you’re not in the market for a new balloon,
but think a used balloon is a better option at this time, here
are some pointers to keep in mind:
- What kind of budget do I have?
- How many people do I want to take along?
- Do I want to be a serious competitor or fly just for fun?
- Do I eventually want to sell rides?
- How often will I fly?
- Will my family and friends want to get involved?
- How much crew is available?
- What kind of support vehicle is available to me?
- Do I need to change vehicles?
- What is the local topography that I am most likely to encounter?
- How will I pay for the balloon?
- Will I use cash, an equity loan or apply for financing?
- What do I want the balloon to look like?
- What colors and designs do I want to put into the balloon?
- Make sure the balloon has a current annual inspection.
- Ask to contact the repair station that performed the annual
and get their opinion on the balloon. If possible, physically
inspect the envelope and components -
- Are they clean and well kept
- Does the envelope smell when taken out of the bag?
- Look for mold or mildew in the fabric.
- Is the wicker in the basket in good condition?
- Are the burner(s) clean and free of direct and soot
build up?
- Inspect the log book. Are there numerous entries for
repairs?
- Does the serial number of the components match the
components being represented?
- Make sure the seller can produce a current airworthiness
certificate, registration and flight manual.
